In detail
Direct reading matters most where the numbers are largest. A district inlet passes millions of cubic metres, and a pulse-counting register that drops counts during an outage builds an error into the district's water balance that nothing downstream can find — the loss figure simply reads high from then on, and crews go looking for water that was never lost.
This meter puts the optical register on the flanged Woltman element, so the figure reported is the figure on the dial. An operator who suspects the balance can compare the two on site and settle the question in one visit.
It takes its power from the M-Bus rather than a battery, which suits a bulk installation where a cable is already being run for other instruments, and it can be read the moment the bus is live. The connection is non-polarity, so it cannot be commissioned backwards.
The register is sealed to IP68 and the optics resist light interference, which matters in a chamber that gets opened in daylight.
