In detail
The wired direct reading meter needs a bus, and a bus needs a route. In a retrofit — an existing block, a scattered layout, a street of individual connections — finding that route is most of the project cost, and it is the reason many metering schemes are specified and never built.
This meter does the same two jobs over radio. It reads the number wheels optically and transmits the reading rather than a pulse count, and it carries a remotely operated valve with the same scheduled preheat that keeps the mechanism free between uses.
Because there is no bus to power it, it runs on an internal battery rated for at least ten years, and the radio is specified for penetration — the obstacle in a domestic scheme is a meter box lid and a concrete slab, not distance across open ground.
It reports sensor faults and battery state on its own initiative, so the scheme learns about a failing meter from the system rather than from the customer whose bill was estimated.
